MUSICAL PARODY OF EUROVISION
1973 THIS WEEK
Massimo Furlan’s 1973 is a musical parody that celebrates the kitsch and glamour of what many say were the real glory days of the Eurovision Song Contest.
Fascinatingly, the setting for this play is the very theatre in which the audience is sitting. In 1973, the year before Abba won with ‘Waterloo’, the Eurovision Song Contest was hosted at the Grand Théâtre after Viki Leandros had won for Luxembourg the previous year.
This exuberant piece will evoke nostalgic memories for many who recall the early 70s as the actors reconstruct the show (with backdrop screenings of actual footage) and offer post-modernist commentary on the music and fashions.
Incidentally, and we hope this is not too much of a plot spoiler, Luxembourg won the 1973 contest, too, with Anne-Marie David singing ‘Tu te reconnaîtras’. But because Luxembourg couldn’t host in consecutive years, the UK got to host the next contest–in Brighton, where the Abba legend was born–after Cliff Richard placed third with ‘Power to all Our Friends’.
The play is in French with English and German subtitles.
