With her participation at this year’s Eurovision, Mirela will attempt to take her song “Stronger” to Belgrade. Having previously taken part in “Misión Eurovisión” and in Eurovision Junior, Mirela is looking to book her place in this year’s contest. Here she talks exclusively to oikotimes.com about her hopes and dreams for the contest.
You present yourself to Eurovision once more, how do you feel?
I feel full of energy, with a lot of desire to once again fight for my dream, which is representing Spain at Eurovision. Let’s see if this year with a lot more luck, I can achieve it with the support of the public, last year I had that support and I still cannot find the words to express the gratitude I feel. I have presented myself because of them.
Your song is “Stronger”, what is the basis of the song?
The song is about my own personal experience, since what I wanted is for a song that reflected myself and since Rafael Artesero (La reina de la noche) gave me the opportunity to work on the lyrics with him, I have based it on my own experiences. I think that people can identify themselves with the lyrics, with an amorous theme, the theme of female abuse, the lyrics can have various meanings but I think it is something good, since people can give it their own meaning.
It could be said that the title of the song means that you are arriving stronger than ever for the contest, what do you think? You are completely right, that is why I have written the song like that, I wanted to send a message to people and tell them that this year I am stronger and that I come with plenty of drive, that I have the desire and passion and that I will give my all, much more than last year.
Are you a fan of Eurovision?
I have followed the contest every year with my family since I was very young and I have always seen myself singing on that stage, I always knew that my goal would be to represent Spain, my country, at the Eurovision Song Contest.
You competed a few years ago in Eurovision Junior, what can you remember about the experience? It was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life since I could share my dream with other people who had the same aim. I had two original songs and it was my first steps to Eurovision, starting from the bottom but it was without doubt an experience that taught me a lot and gave me a greater desire to represent Spain at the Eurovision Song Contest.
This year Spain did not compete at JESC, what is your opinion regarding this?
I will always respect the opinion of TVE since if they made that decision then it must be for a reason. Spain is the country that has achieved the best numbers at Eurovision Junior, a victory for Maria Isabel, two second places for Sergio and Antonio and a fourth place for Dani in 2006. Without doubt given those results, TVE have a good reason for taking such a decision. At the end of the day they are professionals and they know well what they do.
What do you think of the preselection format chosen by TVE this year?
While there is a preselection system, I don’t mind how it is, I think it’s original because it is not the system that is always chosen and I think its good because it has encouraged a lot of people, who would not have done so, to participate. It is always good to give everyone a chance to appear on a television stage, I am only one more.
What else do you have prepared apart from Eurovision? An album?
Apart from Eurovision I am preparing a few projects of which I will talk about at a later date when they are ready and I am able to do so. It is bad luck to talk about projects when they have not yet been released, he, he, he (laughs)
What is your first memory of Eurovision?
I remember Sergio Dalma singing “Bailar pegados” in 1991, I was in love with that song and even if you may not believe me, I still listen to that song today and I still think that it is a hit song. Sergio is an artist who doesn’t age and of whom we can learn a lot, he has a very special voice and a very powerful one.
Do you see yourself in Belgrade?
Before presenting oneself for preselection, what matters is the attitude of each artist and it is always good to go with a positive attitude. To go on stage thinking, “I can win”, so that you can give your all to the people. I feel that the eurofans and the general public deserve the best of me after last year. However, the feet must always remain on the ground, there are some very good songs and some very talented people this year. I think that it will be one of the best preselections that Spain has ever seen.
Do you have a message for the fans?
Thank you to everyone for all the messages of support, for all those messages that have encouraged me to return once more. Without you, “Stronger” would not exist; it is a song for and by you, to thank you for what happened last year during “Misión Eurovisión”. I hope you really like the song, that you vote a lot and that together we may be at that great final on the 1st. Thank you to Oikotimes for the opportunity to be interviewed, it has been a real pleasure to collaborate with one of the best sites of Eurovision. A big kiss for everyone.
