We turn onto the last presentation for this years' Eurovision Song Contest. It comes in the form of
The Netherlands, a nation which has been competing since the inception of the contest. They have not been utterly successful in recent years and have taken a serious downfall since their 2005 entry "
My Impossible Dream" interpreted by
Glennis Grace remained in the semifinal even though punters had predicted it to victory even before the night itself.
The reign of broadcaster "
NOS" comes to an end after this years' edition when "
TROS" will take over as from next year. Therefore as a last effort, the broadcaster went for something really camp and enjoyable in the form of
The Toppers. They will sing their entry "Shine" penned and composed by
Gordon Heuckeroth in the last position being number 19 in semifinal 2.
The Selection
The last song in the semi final will be sung by ‘The Toppers’ for the Netherlands, with the song “Shine”. The Toppers (aka De Toppers) were selected internally by the national broadcaster NOS, despite early problems and the departure of one of the groups member NOS had to act quickly and replace the absent member with Jeroen van der Boom. The public were presented with six songs that were faced with both a jury and televote. “Shine” was the clear favourite across the board and became the 2009 Dutch entry.
The Artists
De Toppers have been singing together since 2005 in the original line up, but with the departure of Gerard Joling in late 2008 meant the group took on a new format for Eurovision. De Toppers are very successful More and sold more than 1,500,000 CDs and DVDs in The Netherlands. They have also had fourteen sell out concerts in Amsterdam and they have been quoted as saying “Our participation is like a dream come true and an absolute milestone in our careers. We are enormously proud that we are representing The Netherlands at the biggest music event in the world and our trip to Moscow is going to be one big and “over the top” spectacle that no one can ignore.”
As soloists each member has had success as recording artists and achieved number one hits in the Dutch charts.
The Song
Shine is a very “happy go lucky” song and it’s very dramatic and there is no mistaking that they each have fantastic vocal capabilities. The song is not bad at all, its very cheesy you can’t dispute that and their outfits at the song selection were almost scarily over the top. The song is well written and is basically a song with happy tunes and cheesy lyrics and even the lyrics say it’s a simple song that makes the world a better place. IT is essentially doing everything that it say’s on the tin. Ultra happy, ultra peppy ultra whoa chill out don’t get over excited. It’s not the best song in the competition, but hey why shouldn’t we have this in the final. It would have people dancing, it’s not serious and the lyrics are simple enough to have people singing along. Well composed, well sung, well performed, but please I am literally begging you to change the outfits!!
We wish The Toppers the best of luck hoping that the end of "NOS" as Eurovision broadcaster will bring about some Nostalgic moments.
Sucess !!
