Stockholm Opera house was sold out today when Malena Ernman performed. Here is our review of the concert.

A new audience has found their way to the opera since Malena Ernman won in Melodifestivalen and participated in Eurovision Song Contest 2009. This is something Malena keeps in mind. The repertoire has a variety from Grieg, Mozart and Rossini via Gershwin to the present number one at the Swedish top chart ”Min plats på jorden” and of course ”La Voix”. 

In the first act Malena entered the stage in stiletto high heels and a beautiful, sexy long dress which gives associations to the Swedish model Victoria Silvstedt . She is joking about being a fake blonde and has a playful dialogue which must be very unusual among internationally famous opera divas. My personal musical highlight appears just before the break when Malena in a brilliant way sings the Angelina’s aria ”Non più mesta” from Rossini’s opera Cinderella.

In act two the dress is changed into trousers and a glittering silver top with Marilyn Monroe profile on the back. The repertoire is close to musical and jazz including Benjamin Britten’s ”Cabaret Songs”, Gershwin and William Bolcom. 

Malena Ernman has a superb and multi-faceted voice. It’s a pity that she could not show off more during Melodifestivalen and ESC.
