The Eurovision Song Contest all-time winner, the Swedish band Abba, have picked up a new accolade for the hit 'Waterloo' – the most performed karaoke song in Britain. The pop song, which was the band's first international number one hit, is preferred to Queen's Bohemian 'Rhapsody' and Frank Sinatra's 'My Way', which picked up the number two and three spots respectively in Britain's first-ever compiled karaoke charts.
PRS for Music, the organisation that collects royalties on behalf of composers and songwriters, revealed the chart yesterday. It is dominated by some of the most famous songs of all time, performed by artists including Madonna, Kyle Minogue and The Beatles. PRS chairman Ellis Rich said: "Karaoke is the modern take on communal singing which has been part of British culture for over a century. Singing is traditionally an uplifting pastime which genuinely brings people together; whether they can actually sing or not doesn't matter!"
Abba's 'Dancing Queen' also features at number five, just behind 'I Will Survive' by Gloria Gaynor.
